HENRICO, VA (WWBT)- Terrifying moments for a man who's jolted out of bed by the sound of thieves in his home. It happened Wednesday night in the 3300 block of Oconto Road in Henrico's West End.
The victim, Brendan Mahoney, says he thought he was dreaming but quickly realized it was reality.
"Honestly I got kind of scared. I didn't want to confront them because I wasn't sure what I was going to meet," he said.
Mahoney was in bed around ten o'clock Wednesday night when something caused him to wake up.
"I heard voices and footsteps inside my house," Mahoney explained.
Strangers were making their way through his home. Mahoney says he jumped out of bed, slammed his bedroom door and dialed 911.
Mahoney feared the worst.
"My first thought was they'd come into my bedroom where I was most vulnerable," said Mahoney.
After a few moments the criminals took off. Police say, the homeowner did the right thing by not trying to take on the criminals.
"Because you don't know what they have, what they're trying to get, if it's a property crime or what they're doing," said Officer W.H. Rollins with the Henrico County Police Department.
Rollins says, victims should quickly find a safe room.
"A safe room is somewhere you lock the door, and if they try to get through the door it will give you time to get out of the house," Rollins added.
Mahoney's sense of security is shattered. Even so, he says he's lucky.
"They didn't take anything. They didn't harm me. This is my home and I'm not going anywhere," said Mahoney.
If you have any information on this crime contact Henrico County Police or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
